Expansion of Huntsville's Oldest Visual Arts Gallery

Posted by Martina Svoboda | | Posted On Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 3:28 PM

In its 53rd year, the Huntsville Art League Gallery is expanding by opening one of its walls to 17 newly created art studios. The new studio spaces are being rented by individual artists. Some are using their area to create new art, and others are using the space for display.  There is much new excellent art, and it is all available for purchase.  This expansion doubles the size of HAL Gallery, bringing it to 5000 square feet.  This was primarily the brainchild of the building owner, Ben Stevens.

HAL Gallery is operated by the Huntsville Art League, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and understanding of the visual arts. The gallery features the work of local and regional artists. You will find pictures in oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, and mixed media; photography; note cards, original jewelry, sculpture, glasswork, pottery, metalwork, hand-painted silk items, weavings, the occasional wood piece, and other original creations!

In addition to their Visiting Artists and “Limelight Artists” series, which highlight both nonresident and member artists, HAL features its members’ works at galleries located in the Jane Grote Roberts Auditorium of the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, the Heritage Club, and the halls of the Huntsville Times.

April Limelight Artist - Sam Tumminello

Sam Tumminello
Photographer

Sam Tumminello is an award-winning photographer from Huntsville, Alabama. He's a four time past president of the Huntsville Photographic Society, has won every major award of the organization; is a two time recipient of their Presidents Award, and earned the rank of Master in the Society.

His photographs have been published in several national publications including American Photographer magazine, and many Huntsville publications.  In 1992 he received a Merit Award, from the show juror, retired Life magazine photographer Ed Clark, for his color dye transfer composition Une Marriage en Paris.

In 1991, his gelatin silver print composition Pierre’s Blossom was accepted by the juried exhibition show:  “The Classic Cliché, Southern Magnolia”; sponsored by the State of Alabama Council of the Arts.

In 1999, four of his color photographs were published in the Huntsville / Madison County Chamber of Commerce book:  "Huntsville / Madison County:  To the Edge of the Universe" by Towery Publishing.  In 2010 one of his historical photographs depicting the 1968 dedication of the Huntsville-Madison County Airport is published in the book “Images of Aviation - Huntsville Air and Space”

In 2007 four of his photographs were included in the State of Alabama Arts Council series titled “ALABAMA ORIGINALS, in the exhibition:   “A Sense of Place” honoring living Alabama artists for the YEAR OF ALABAMA ARTS.

Most recently he has been enthused about creating fine art prints with the Inchiostro Technique.   “Inchiostro” is an art media process utilizing a digitized image, manipulated by the artist on an “electronic plate".  The piece is transferred to paper using only black ink.  After the print is examined by the artist it may be re-worked until a bon a' tier is produced for limited edition printings. The Inchiostro technique is more than printing an image on paper; it is more importantly a disciplined approach using the artist’s aesthetics and creative talents to produce the art piece on the “plate”.  It is only after the plate is worked to the satisfaction of the artist that the precision printing begins.

A STATEMENT OF ART

“I work diligently at the craft of photography and printmaking and believe the title of artist is earned by diligence, persistence and knowledgeable execution of the craft.

I’m enthused to work with grayscale ( also known as black and white or monochromic) prints.  I prefer to consider subjects without hues to seek and distill the essence of the subject.

"I’ve always had a fascination with light and dark aspects, or the “Chiaroscuro” of subjects and  I strive to critically record the elements.  This recorded image then becomes a “plate” I rework and refine to produce the fine art print.  To paraphrase photographer Ansel Adams – if the image is the score the print is the performance.  I strive for an excellent performance.

I strive to evoke meaningful responses and emotions from the viewer – so they may consider what I considered.”  Visual art is collaboration between the artist and the person who appreciates the art piece.

Collector's Draw 2010

Posted by Huntsville Art League | | Posted On Sunday, March 14, 2010 at 10:41 AM

The 2010 Collector’s Draw is in the history books. On 21 Feb., 102 ticket holders went thru the unique “agony and ecstasy” of Collector’s Draw. They had 107 pieces of great art to pick from (which is one of the things that makes it so hard)! But all seemed to have a fun time. We had over 150 in attendance.
We have to start with our Thanks: 74 artists contributed art (20 more than one piece). Those who gave 3 were: Dan and Pat Tatum, Maria West, Mark Teague, and Renee Prasil. Those who gave 4 were: Walt Schumacher, Jerry Brown, and Don Broome. Every artist that contributed is invited to participate in the Collector’s Draw Limelight exhibition in July/August, which coincides with Gallery Tour.

In addition, Huntsville “legend” Gene Wood contributed a painting, which went up for auction for several times the ticket price. HAL greatly appreciates her support!
Our corporate sponsor again this year was Alabama Heritage Homes, and we presented a plaque and our appreciation to Kathy Wright. They also became Honorary Lifetime members.
Of course, we greatly appreciate our ticket buyers. Collector’s Draw goes a long way towards keeping HAL in business, and continuing our work of supporting visual art and artists in the Tennessee Valley!

A big Thanks to our workers: Heike Covell was our data entry and card hanging person, Teresia Reid and Julia Hawk were super at finding sponsors. Walt Schumacher did the coordination, “Calls for Art,” “Calls for Buyers,” signage, put the pictures and data on the web, etc. Teresia Reid also had the Ribbons made and secured the “Bingo cage,” and Sallie Estes rounded up all the folks necessary to do the “final push” of moving the art, and actually carry off the Draw. It takes quite a few “Draw Day” workers:
MOVE RACKS to VBC — Dan Tatum, Tim Prost, Harry Reid
MOVE ART to VBC and Hang It — Harriet Dobbins, Heike Covell, Walt S, Janet S, Joan Funk
CHECK OUT TABLE — Marcia Leonard, Mary Ellen Davidson, Carolyn Wheeling, Patti Eldridge, Tim Prost, Julia Hawk
TICKET RUNNERS — Teresia Reid, Lea Ellison, Harriet Dobbins ART RUNNERS — Joe Estes, Harry Reid, Jerry Brown, Billy Herrin, Marc Hilden, Hal Cronkhite, Kay McWhorter
“ART GONE” COMPUTER OPERATOR — Janet Schumacher
ART PASSER-OUTERS — Heike Covell, Sallie Estes, Vanessa Miller
And of course, our Master of Ceremonies, Steve Johnson, who really keeps it all going!
